Welcome to Friday Fixations — a weekly space for whatever I can't stop thinking about as we head into the weekend. This week's fixation is the ever-controversial voice note. You know, the ones the internet has recently decided are annoying, inconsiderate, or an immediate red flag. And to that I say: how dare you?!
Voice notes solve problems texting creates. You get tone instead of guesswork, context instead of confusion, and honesty instead of perfectly-edited sentences that say nothing. They're practical! They're personal! They're wildly misunderstood. Sometimes you need to talk something through out loud to understand how you truly feel. And there's nothing wrong with that! A true friend will allow the rambling — in fact, they might even enjoy it.
So, to all my voice-note lovers: you aren't alone. I'm with you. And to all my voice-note haters . . .
Double Dog Dare You: This weekend, send a voice note instead of a text (unless you're scared). If it turns into a mini podcast, let it. That's the whole point! You might surprise yourself.
