ICYMI, I've been away for a few months on maternity leave. And in my absence, my incredible colleagues have taken over the newsletter. But I'm officially staging a comeback. And so is Serena Williams . . . in a much bigger way, of course.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is confirmed to play doubles at the WTA Queen's Club next week after stepping away from the sport in 2022. In reflecting on her return, I started thinking about how we view our relationship to the things that were once at the center of our lives.
In the announcement of Williams’s return, we are reminded that stepping away from something doesn’t have to be forever — and that your relationship to it can change.
When Williams initially announced her departure from tennis, she said she was “evolving” away from the sport. And now, she’s evolving back toward it. That’s how I think we should look at our own life axis — remembering that an axis isn’t just a straight line; it tends to have objects rotating around it, coming in and out of view.
"Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages," Williams said regarding her return.
Just like Williams, we are allowed to evolve in our relationships with certain people, hobbies, or even a career. "I'm currently allowing myself to be tired. Allowing myself to relax. Allowing myself to just be," Williams wrote in a 2022 post about stepping away from tennis. Now nearly four years later, she’s returning on her own time and terms.
In other words, it's never too late for a comeback.
