Have you seen those "2026 is the new 2016" Instagram posts? My feed is filled with them, and it's bringing me so much joy — so much so that I did one myself.
2016 was a fun year for me. I was in college. I had my belly button pierced. I dip-dyed my hair blond, which turned to this brassy orange shade that I still thought was so cool (in reality, it was not). Everything was an opportunity for an impromptu photoshoot, and VSCO filters were used generously. It was unserious — on social media especially.
Beauty, in particular, was so fun. It was all about experimentation and play. The era of King Kylie was born. Matte lipstick (I hadn't picked up a lip gloss in years at that point), heavy eyeshadow, thick winged eyeliner, and blinding highlights were the standard. I layered on glittery, metallic eyeshadow — the kind that's reserved now for special occasions — just for work or class, and documented each and every look with a Snapchat story.
What a time.
