Popsugar's Genevieve Farrell was staring at a leaf in the lush gardens of the Four Seasons's adults-only Sensei Lanai, trying to commit to the Japanese mindfulness practice of "forest bathing." It's supposed to be a tool for de-stressing, to immerse yourself in a forest environment and allow your senses to ground you in the present. "There were koi ponds and the gentle sound of birds chirping, a serene utopia by design," Genevieve writes. "If ever there was an opportunity to be in the now, it was in this moment." But her mind wouldn't slow down. Instead, it kept recalling how she could no longer Facetime her mom. In the nearly 18 months since Genevieve lost her mom, she found herself reaching for the phone instinctively, wanting to dial her mom during chaotic days with her two toddlers, or after big career milestones. "Returning to the busyness of these activities would soften the intensity of the sadness that she was no longer with me," Genevieve writes. "But in this visually vivid but quiet setting, the sadness lingered." |
