The release of Taylor Swift's newest album, "The Life of a Showgirl," has me wondering what it's like to be a real-life showgirl. Behind the feathers and red lips, there's a lot of discipline and ritual — and a glam routine that doesn't budge.
To get the scoop, we talked to showgirl Allie Goodbun, who works at Moulin Rouge in Paris, to get her unfiltered routine, beauty secrets, and the one makeup tip she swears by. Keep reading for a peek behind the curtain.
Popsugar: Walk us through your prep. What do you do before a performance to help you get ready?
Allie Goodbun: On a show day, I always like to make sure I feel my best from the moment I wake up to the time I'm finished on stage every night. I like to make sure I get eight to nine hours of sleep, even if it means waking up much later than the rest of the world due to our late working hours.
I do both hair and face masks one to two times per week. With the amount of products I use, my face and hair need as much hydration as they can get. Also, because we are dancing in heels all night, every night, I get a pedicure monthly to take care of the feet — it is very important as well.
PS: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
AG: To get in the right headspace before a show, I do a full-body, 30-minute stretch in my Paris apartment while listening to my favorite playlist before heading to the theater. This is my time to focus, get in the zone, and prepare my body properly for a full night of dancing ahead. It's my "me" time, and I always have a better show when I prioritize this.
PS: Do you get any treatments regularly that help keep you stage-ready?
AG: Over the years, I have learnt what makes my skin and body feel their best while performing 12-show weeks. I get a deep tissue massage weekly on my day off to take care of my muscles.
As for my skin, I have just started getting facials when I feel like my skin is feeling dry and needs extra attention. Ensuring my skin is healthy and feeling good is essential for the amount of stage makeup I am wearing every week.
