"The Smashing Machine," in theaters now, follows the life of MMA fighter Mark Kerr (played by Dwayne Johnson) and his wife, Dawn Staples (played by Emily Blunt). The movie chronicles his career, his struggles with addiction, and their relationship. Being set in the '90s and early 2000s, it's also filled with nostalgic motifs, right down to Blunt's nails.
Every detail mattered. Julie Kandalec, the celebrity nail artist behind the look (and a longtime member of Blunt's glam team), recognized that, and she created a custom French set that captured the late '90s perfectly, right down to the curves and flares.
Keep reading to learn how the set came together.
Popsugar: Tell us about Emily Blunt's nails in the film.
Julie Kandalec: The film takes place between 1997 and 2000. As someone who was in cosmetology school at that exact time, there was only one nail enhancement to use for the time period accuracy: acrylic. She wore them for the full time of filming, too. She has commented that having the nails on truly brought her into the character of Dawn.
PS: Why did the French feel like the best choice for this period?
JK: Emily plays Dawn Staples, Mark Kerr's girlfriend, and she wore pink-and-white acrylics like this during this time period. She was a former model and very trendy — very into beauty. The slightly flared shape, curved tip, and chunkier shape were done with intention, too. I remember wearing these exact nails from this period, and they could not be white enough, square enough, or chunky enough.
PS: What products did you use?
JK: I used a custom blend of CND's acrylic sculpting powders in Light Peach Pink, Medium Cool Pink, and Intense Pink for the pink, and Bright White sculpting powder for the tips. I chose to use CND with intention, too. I have used CND from the start of my career, as it's a legacy brand that's been around for over 40 years.
