One quick scroll on PilatesTok and I promise you'll find the same debate over and over again: mat Pilates vs. reformer. Which one's easier? Which one's better for your body? Which one yields a celebrity physique? That last question is worth an essay of its own. But when it comes to the larger debate of mat Pilates vs. reformer, in recent years the main argument is that reformer classes (and their cousins, Lagree or Megaformer classes) are better or harder than mat Pilates classes. And that's not exactly true. We're all missing the bigger picture, says PS contributor and Pilates instructor-in-training Mercey Livingston. "In fact, mat Pilates was meant to be the most difficult form of Pilates — once you mastered the exercises with other equipment, including reformers, moving to the mat was a sign of mastery," she writes. "When I learned this, I never looked at a reformer Pilates class the same way again." |
