Those who know me well know I have a dark secret: I used to hate birds. Their wings are so erratic, their eyes so beady. I used to be scared to eat outside lest a rogue pigeon come looking for crumbs within 10 feet of me. (God forbid I was wearing open-toed shoes.)
But lately my feed has been flooded with birding content, meaning large chunks of my time are now spent scrolling through informational rants about bird dialects and rare species sightings. To my utter shock, it's all brought me immense joy in an otherwise scary and depressing digital landscape. I even find myself getting excited about hawks I see on my hot-girl walks, and smiling politely at the flock of pigeons that haunts my local subway entrance.
I guess I'm . . . a bird girl now? And so are millions of others just like me, finding an obsession in a hobby that's long been overlooked because of its "geriatric tinge," as prominent birding influencer and musician Bonner Black cheekily puts it.
