When our fitness video director Genevieve Farrell decided to run the Berlin Marathon, she knew it'd be memorable. The course is known for being flat and fast, with few hills and tons of beautiful scenery. People often head to Berlin to achieve their fastest times since it's the flattest of all the World Majors.
But nothing could have prepared Genevieve for the brutally hot weather and having to be hosed down by volunteers along the way. "Between miles 18 and 22 . . . the sun was merciless and every stride felt like a negotiation," she recalls.
Equally daunting: the fact that Harry Style completed the exact same marathon in less than three hours. "I'm most impressed that Harry Styles was able to run a sub-three-hour marathon in 75-degree weather while wearing a black long-sleeve top. I wore a T-shirt and was drenched in sweat by mile three," Genevieve writes. "As soon as I felt the heat, I pivoted my goal to simply completing the race without needing an aid station."
Still, she's proud of the accomplishment and sends her kudos to all the other partners-in-sweat that weekend. "I met my personal goal of crossing the finish line without injury (thank you, Adidas Supernova Rise 2s) and, perhaps just as impressively, without slipping at the water stations — which, in the heat of the race, felt more like a slip-and-slide than a hydration break," Genevieve writes.
As for Styles: "As a three-time marathoner, I lift my sweaty hat to Harry. On the grueling day, a PR wasn't in the books for most of us, who went from Plan A to Plan Survival," she writes.
