Everyone's Getting Laid Off These Days. Why Is It Still So Lonely? |
In the fourth quarter of 2024 alone, Americans lost 7.5 million jobs. Yet the experience of being laid off is still so isolating. People feel shame and guilt when they're let go, regardless of how many posts they see on LinkedIn from peers detailing the sometimes gruesome and unceremonious ways they've been dealt the same fate.
To cope, layoff-weary job seekers are mining their professional skills to create solidarity in the form of literary anthologies, Substacks, and viral graphic designs that all help to undercut the stigma of being "desperate for work."
I spoke to some of those creators for this report on why today's job applicants have to go to such extraordinary lengths to not only get hired, but to get the bare minimum from a hiring manager — and the impact that dynamic is having on the psyches of young people on the job hunt today. |
