| AI Chatbots Have New Boundaries, So I Tried to Get One to Break Up With Me |
|
|
I am a proud AI hater. (If I wasn't before, recent reports on the human and environmental costs it takes to run AI data centers have sure made me one.)
But anytime I write about the modern digital landscape for Popsugar, I try to focus less on the technology and how much I hate it, and more on the gushy human stuff — the stuff that's endangered by AI — and how much I love it. I've written about how human-made art is more engaging than anything a computer could generate, making it less likely to become background noise. I've written about how much I love a good face-to-face interaction, whether we're gabbing or flirting (ooh la la). I've written about snail mail and the precious experience of receiving a handwritten letter instead of a DM.
To be fair, I'm pretty far from a luddite — though a life without a phone is tempting. Still, you won't catch me hitting up a chatbot anytime soon. That's why I'm grateful for my colleague Chandler Plante, who — after several different TikTok Lives recently sparked fears of widespread AI psychosis — decided to embark on an experiment to test OpenAI's new "boundaries," and to see if GPT-5 is better equipped to protect users' mental health. |

I Tried It: An Underpainting Palette |
In today's featured column, three Popsugar editors try a new palette from Hailey Bieber's makeup artist. |

3 Editors Test the Viral Underpainting Palette Created by Hailey Bieber's Makeup Artist |
It's official: Hailey Bieber's makeup artist, Mary Phillips, just launched a makeup brand, and to say we're excited is an understatement. Phillips is the mastermind behind the looks on some of our favorite celebrities, like Kendall Jenner, Dua Lipa, Jennifer Lopez, and more. She's popularized many a makeup hack, including one that broke the internet: underpainting. Which, of course, is why we decided the first product from her line we needed to test was none other than the M.ph by Mary Phillips Underpainting Face Highlight and Contour Palette ($64).
And if you're wondering what the helly underpainting actually is, it's simpler than it sounds. — Renee Rodriguez |
