The wellness world has gotten its priorities allll messed up. In recent years, we've celebrated a kind of wellness that is unattainable. Waitlist-only Pilates classes, $13 matcha lattes, biweekly facials that cost more than your weekly grocery bill — when did those become markers of self-care? But as we get closer to an economic recession (have you seen the layoff rates recently?), Yasmine Jameelah, founder of Transparent Black Girl, says we're in for a reality check. The wellness recession is coming — and consumerism won't be what saves you, she argues. "You don't need to have a lineage of rituals or an expert-level routine to begin. What you need is access, compassion, and community. Because no matter where your journey starts, you deserve to feel well. Not because you've earned it — but because you exist." |
