| I fought back tears on the 20-minute drive to my baby shower. Sandwiched between pastel balloons and platters of, well, actual sandwiches, I felt so very silly for feeling so sad. This was supposed to be a fun day — a simple celebration to mark what'd been a very joyous chapter in my life. And yet . . .
A baby shower is perceived to be the big celebratory high point in any pregnancy, but it can come with unexpected emotions. For me, it brought up self-pity, nostalgia pangs, and far more self-reflection than I'd like. ("No thoughts, just vibes" tends to be my preferred mode.) But I can't be alone in this, right? Read more on what "baby shower blues" ultimately taught me about my pregnancy. |

| Parents might have ditched the scrapbooks and camcorders long ago, but that doesn't mean they're not still meticulously documenting each milestone in their child's life. This is what memory-keeping looks like now, according to parents. |

| The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders recently received a "life-changing" 400 percent raise. Sorry to flatten your pom-poms, but here's why that still might be far too low. |

In today's featured column, PS contributor Micaela English recaps her journaling retreat for our Hype Check franchise. |

In a deluge of screens, scrolling, and Substack, the simple practice of putting pen to paper seems, well, retro. But could that crisp blank page and fresh ink be the secret to dopamine hits and better brain health? Spoiler alert: hell yes. According to a 2024 study in Frontiers in Psychology, writing by hand actually lights up and fires off neural connectivity wires in the brain for a boost of memory and recall. Plus, there's something supernatural about writing by hand: the summoning of the creative muse; the pen, your magic wand, channeling inner incantations onto the page. Thoughts that once ricocheted around in your mind can take an exhale and settle down.
Journaling is part of my morning practice; it's my little bite of tranquility. So, when I stumbled upon journaling expert Laura Rubin and learned she was doing a retreat, I thought, "Oh, this is for me." My previous retreats? Bootcamp marathons with schedules packed tighter than a TikTok star's wedding — HIIT circuits, Downward Dogs, and sweat-soaked hustle. But now, at 40, I've been embracing wellness at a softer, slower pace. While movement remains a core pillar, inner exercises guide me to more zeniths than pounding pavement does. — Micaela English |
