How Banning Menthol Cigarettes Will Protect Future Generations of Black Families |
The FDA recently announced proposed rules to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. This historic decision could result in up to 650,000 lives saved in the next 40 years, including 238,000 Black lives. Big Tobacco's predatory marketing to Black Americans with menthol cigarettes has lasted for decades and the impact on Black health has been devastating. Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death among Black Americans, claiming 45,000 Black lives every year. ESSENCE® spoke to Tahjma Hall, who grew up surrounded by menthol cigarette advertising, and Dr. Martha Dawson, who describes the major impact on the health of the Black community. Supporting the FDA's proposed rules to ban menthol cigarettes will protect Black families and save lives. |
