When it comes to breast cancer treatment, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities face life-threatening disadvantages and racial disparities within the healthcare industry.

A lack of healthcare education breeds ongoing structural inequality for these patients, especially surrounding breast reconstruction surgery and life after cancer, a gap that desperately needs to be closed.

ESSENCE® spoke with Board-Certified General Surgeon and Breast Surgical Oncologist Dr. Vivian Bea, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Nyama Sillah, and Caleen Allen from Sisters Network® Inc. about the racial disparities BIPOC women face during their breast cancer journeys, and the options that can help improve quality of life post-treatment, including breast reconstruction.
