Widen the Screen to Widen our View

Widen the Screen to Widen our View

When we see Black life portrayed on screen, it's too often through extremes. We see either a picture of suffering and trauma, or one of superstardom – but rarely do we see the full picture of everyday Black life happening in between.

When we look behind the camera at the individuals who are – and more importantly, aren't – making these films, it's easy to see the disconnect. According to a recent UCLA study, less than 6% of writers, directors, and producers of US-made films are Black.

The circumstances of the past year have brought the urgency of these issues into even greater focus, and the time to act is now.

That's why P&G has launched Widen the Screen - an expansive platform that enables representation and inclusion of Black creators across the advertising, film and media ecosystems. Through content creation, talent development and thoughtful partnerships, the program will provide access and opportunity to Black creators to bring the full, multi-faceted richness of Black life to the big screen.

This is just the start, and our work is far from finished. We will keep going, and we invite others to join us. Because when we widen the screen to widen our view, we can broaden the spectrum of images we see, voices we hear, stories we tell and people we understand.
