Election Day Is Nov 5, Vote Like Black Women’s Lives Are on the Line

A Second Trump Term Could Mean Worse Maternal Health Outcomes

More than half of Black women in our country live in a state with a Trump abortion ban (source). 68% of OBGYNs say that the overturning of Roe has worsened their ability to manage pregnancy-related emergencies. Add to that the fact that Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women and you start to see how urgent this next election really is for our communities.

Trump brags about overturning Roe v. Wade — he's proud of it. And if he gets his way, he would ban abortion nationwide and terminate the Affordable Care Act. His agenda would not only rip away our fundamental right to make decisions about our bodies, but it threatens to rip insurance coverage away from over 3 million Black Americans. And for Black women it could mean making already high maternal mortality rates worse. Because of Trump's bans, Black women are being forced to the brink of death before getting the care they need – and even facing death itself.

Vice President Harris has already been working to address this crisis in our communities. She helped to strengthen the ACA and expanded Medicaid postpartum coverage, impacting about 65% of births for Black mothers. Her plan for our future includes greater investments in rural health care, expanded access to doulas and midwives, and diversifying the maternal health workforce so Black women can benefit from culturally competent providers.

We know that reproductive health care is essential health care. It's about having access to the medical care that you need in life and death situations. It's about the right to self-determination and having the freedom to make decisions about your body, your family, and your future without the government interfering. Only one candidate understands the crisis we face and is proposing solutions to restore our freedom and strengthen our care. Election Day is Nov 5. We have to vote to make sure we protect our reproductive freedom and continue moving forward.
